What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a hypothalamic nonapeptide released from the posterior pituitary. It is involved in uterine contraction and milk ejection; social-behavior roles are studied separately. Prescription oxytocin injection, intranasal experimental sprays, and a supplier research vial are not interchangeable.
What has research examined?
An FDA-approved oxytocin injection label describes specific obstetric indications and hospital-level monitoring. A large randomized intranasal trial in children and adolescents with autism tested social-function outcomes and found no statistically significant primary benefit. Neither study validates unregulated vial use outside its own formulation and context.
Biological-unit conversion, formulation, and medical supervision matter. This page does not recommend obstetric use, social-behavior treatment, amount, or administration.

Approved obstetric oxytocin is labeled in biological units and delivered in a controlled medical setting. A generic mg-to-U-100 conversion cannot infer biological-unit potency or substitute for exact-product labeling.
