FDA warns that dietary-supplement-grade glutathione is not suitable for making injectable drugs and has reported serious endotoxin-associated events. A mass-volume calculation cannot assess ingredient grade, endotoxin, sterility, or suitability.

What is Glutathione?

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide synthesized in cells from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, with a gamma-glutamyl linkage. It participates in antioxidant and other redox systems. Endogenous GSH, oral products, and injectable formulations are different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What has research examined?

Biochemical studies describe glutathione’s redox and conjugation roles in cells. A mechanistic review covers its synthesis and metabolism; these general facts do not prove that a separately sourced vial treats any condition. FDA has reported at least 30 adverse-event cases after compounded IV glutathione made using dietary-supplement-grade ingredient, with symptoms consistent with endotoxin exposure, including fever, shock-like reactions, and hospitalizations. FDA stresses that such grade is inappropriate for sterile injectables.

Important limitation

A naturally occurring molecule is not automatically safe as a formulated product. Serious quality and endotoxin concerns cannot be addressed by a calculator or a supplier label. This page does not recommend injection, preparation, amount, or use.
