What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic derivative of the alpha-MSH sequence with melanocortin receptor activity. It differs from afamelanotide (Melanotan I), whose approved product is a specific implant for erythropoietic protoporphyria. Their names do not confer shared approval.

What has research examined?

A pilot placebo-controlled study involved only three male volunteers and reported pigmentation and other physiological effects after the investigated material. Such a tiny short-term study cannot establish long-term safety or an acceptable cosmetic application. FDA lists published case reports of serious adverse events associated with Melanotan II, including melanoma, posterior reversible encephalopathy, sympathomimetic toxidrome, and priapism; case reports do not by themselves prove causality.

Important limitation

Supplier powders may differ from experimental material in identity, purity, and sterility. FDA also highlights peptide aggregation/impurity and possible immunogenicity. This page recommends no tanning, amount, administration, or preparation.
